Bridal Shower Secrets

guest at bridal showerOne of the events at a wedding that seems to be overlooked is the bridal shower. I spend many hours a week with new brides and rarely is this topic ever brought up. I decided to look them up and see what does a Pinterest bridal shower look like?

Quickly on Pinterest, you can tell bridal showers have turned in to DIY showcases. I saw elaborate backdrops, themed food stations and everything had a personal sign. It was almost as overwhelming as doing a themed wedding search. All of this makes up a beautiful setting, gorgeous to say the least. Except it seems to be missing one thing.

This one thing is what I love about bridal showers. The conversations that happened at bridal showers between mothers, grandmothers, aunts and best friends are some of the most precious moments during this wedding season. This is the time when secrets are shared and advice is given. Some of it may seem outdated but most of it is timeless. You will laugh and maybe even cry a little bit.

So my bit of advice to you going into your bridal shower planning is to make a place for conversation. A small snack, a cuppa t, a and a long sit will fill you up with so much wisdom and advice. You will feel more than prepared when you take that walk down the aisle.

FOMO! Brides tell us it is real every day.

FOMO!  Yup, brides tell us it is real every day.  Fear of missing out!

This Magic Moment Bridal StudioWhile a study from a bridal Facebook group determined that the majority of brides only go to one store to shop, we see many brides who have 2-4 shops picked for their marathon bridal shopping weekend with their gang.

It is even worse when that very first dress stays in first place.  Oh my gosh, how can that be?  Let us tell you, it can be!  Happens a lot.  You know what you want and either picked it or described enough for a good attendant to pick it.

If you have tried on 10-15 dresses, you should have a very good idea if you have had enough choices and options.  Most importantly, just settle into trying on the dresses, take a moment to breathe, and determine if you feel beautiful and special enough for your magical day.

You clearly planned out this day so you have the most important people with you.  They are there to support you.  They are there to celebrate with you when you find that gorgeous dress.  Be present, relax, and enjoy it with each of them.

FOMO is a state of mind.

One state states FOMO as ‘the uneasy and sometimes all-consuming feeling that you’re missing out – that your peers are doing, in the know about, or in possession of more or something better than you’’. Under this framing of FOMO, nearly three quarters of young adults reported they experienced the phenomenon.

FOMO can originate from unhappiness.  Let us just tell you, you should never be unhappy bridal shopping.  Whatever you body looks like, whatever your life is, whatever your day has brought, it’s a time to be happy, alive, and confident.  Someone loves you for the exact person you are.

Forget FOMO  Focus on all the love!

If you have done the research, and picked the perfect bridal store meeting your needs and wants, go with confidence your dress is there.  If it turns out it is not there for whatever reason, then try again.  No big deal.

Many times we see our brides relieved at our bridal appointments because they will have the opportunity to try on all the different shapes, styles, colors and materials to fully determine what they love on themselves.

A wedding dress usually is the most expressive garment you will ever wear.  It is like no other!

A Neckline Perfect For You

The perfect wedding dress neckline can make a difference.  Going to look for your wedding dress can be overwhelming at first.  There are so many different shapes, styles, necklines, waistlines, colors, trains….so which one is right for you?  Breathe! Relax and take your time exploring a variety on you.

You will begin to discover what looks and feels best on you for you.  Just because it looks great, doesn’t mean you feel comfortable and confident. Find the one that give you it all.

So to start, let’s get acquainted with all the different wedding dress necklines you will find when looking for your wedding dress:

Wedding Dress Neckline1.  V-Neck:  This neckline dips into a V-shape in the front.  It is often a very slimming style on many body types at is elongates the silhouette.  Rounder face shapes appear more oval and petite brides appear a bit taller. V-necks also make it sexy!  The deeper the V, the sexier the bride. It usually works best with smaller to middle-size breasts and cleavage.  It allows for longer necklaces to be worn.
2.  Square:  A neckline that creates a square shape across the upper chest and is usually seen with straps or sleeves.
3.  High Neck:  The high neck appearance is similar to a turtleneck.  A great option for brides looking for a modest neckline.  It also gives a bride a more sophisticated look. Great for the offbeat or high fashion bride as they can tend to be edgy in fashion.  Most times it requires a bride to wear less jewelry and an updo hairstyle.
4.  Bateau or boatneck:  This neckline features a wider opening at the neck that runs parallel to your collar bone and comes together near the tip of your shoulders. It gives off a sweet simplicity.  It can create the illusion of a bigger chest in a small-breasted women.  Boatneck necklines are inherently graceful and usually recommends modest and simple accessories with this classic look.  (Psst….this was Meghan Markle’s dress!)
Wedding Dress Neckline5.  Illusion:  An illusion neckline that features sheer fabric or lace along the top part of the bodice.  Super popular and modern right now. The sheer fabric gives way to a hint of skin and is fashioned in different shapes and materials or lace.  It gives a great balance between sexy and sophisticated. Illusion neckline detailing is great for all preferences and body types.
6.  One-Shoulder:  One-shoulder is a very modern neckline, also known as asymmetrical, featuring one strap.  It is perfect for showing off your shoulders, collarbone, and upper arms.
7.  Off-the-Shoulder:  Off-the-shoulder is a very romantic style that allows the neckline to show off the collarbone with the material hitting the arms below the shoulder.  Think “old Hollywood” or boho-chic! Just remember that the material that sits low on the shoulders and arms restricts movement. Sometimes a trade-off for romance!
8.  Strapless:  Like it sounds, no straps!  A traditional strapless goes straight across the chest. This neckline is flattering on most body types, but is especially great on women with broader shoulders.  It accentuates the collarbone and shoulders. The straight across line can also give more of a vintage look and feel.
Wedding Dress Neckline9.  Scoop:  A Scoop neckline is rounded in the front neckline falling lower than a jewel neckline. Scoop necklines work great on brides with an athletic, pear, hourglass and/or petite shapes as it draws the eye down due to the wider neckline.  This lengthens your neck and accentuates your collarbone.
10.  Queen Anne:  A regal neckline that features a higher collar in the back and a scoop or V-neck in the front. This neckline conveys an Old-World charm and regality.  It highlights the neck and frames the upper chest.
11.  Halter:  A halter neckline usually ties around the neck in some form.  Great when a bride wants to expose her shoulders.  Great for creating a sliming look for broad shoulders.  It will flatter the upper body (shoulders and arms) of a taller bride. It will also help some shorter brides generate a taller figure by emphasizing the neck for a longer silhouette.  Halter necklines not only help show off the shoulders, but the upper back too. Keep it simple with jewelry….just the ears whether dramatic, dangling ones, or simple drop earrings. Perfect for the offbeat bride.
12.  Jewel:  A Jewel neckline has a small scoop fitted right below base of the throat and above the collarbone just like a crew-neck t-shirt. It is simple, modest and perfect for the bride who doesn’t want to be revealing.  This neckline is idyllic for anyone who wants to accentuate their upper body. It makes small-chested women appear bustier.
Spagetti Strap, Sweetheart, Cowl Wedding Dress Neckline13.  Sweetheart:  A strapless neckline that dips in the front creating an outline of the top of an upside down heart is called a Sweetheart neckline.  It is the most popular as it is flattering on most people. It is chic and sexy in a regal and tasteful way.  Sweethearts can help bustier brides enhance their natural curves. It works great for smaller shaped brides to create the illusion of a larger bust.  The sweetheart neckline can be slightly dipping (13A) to a plunging deep line (13B).
14.  Spaghetti Straps:  A neckline featuring very thin straps called Spaghetti straps.  This gives a sweet, dainty look.
15.  Cowl: Cowl neckline is a loose fitting and draping material in the front neckline.  It gives some old world romance and softness to the neckline.

The best way to discover what looks best on you may just be to try them.  Wedding dresses are like no other, so go to a place that will give you the variety and options to try on the different necklines that catch your eye or that you know look best on you.

What veil is right for me?

Choosing a wedding veil can be a wonderful eveilxperience if you have a little knowledge on the differences of veils. Wedding veils come in seven standard lengths, each of these lengths has its own benefit to the bride. It is not as confusing as one may think to pick the perfect veil and here is quick guide to help you.

45 inch shoulder length: Works really well with shorter wedding gowns or less formal wedding gowns. Especially cute on a shorter hair style.

54 inch waist or elbow length: This is a very popular length for your wedding veils however you need to make sure that the trim of the veil does not compete with the back of your dress. If you have a less ornate dress a very elaborate trim may be the perfect wow factor for walking down the aisle.

72 inch hip or fingertip veilThis is a particularly flattering veil when completed in a raw edge. A single layer provides full view of the back of the dress and still has a fullness or halo effect around the bride. Definitely one of my favorite lengths.

90 inch floor or waltz length: This veil looks really great on shorter brides who want that fuller veil without it turning into a floor veil.

108 inch ballet floor or puddle veil: Depending on your height this veil will end right at floor or puddles just behind the dress. This looks very refined with gown that does not have a train.

126 inch chapel length: This length this generally the go to for a full veil it will extend inches past the train on most gowns  and produces elegant pictures at the wedding. Definitely a wow factor.

144 inch cathedral lengthYou can’t get more grand than this. My best piece of advice is make sure it fits down the aisle.

Ultimately remember to have fun when shopping for your veil just like you did when you were picking your dress. The best time to pick your veil is right after you say yes to your dress, that way you know what the completed look looks like without much fuss.

How to be a last-minute bride and still keep your chill

So you want to get married and you really do not want to plan out a wedding over a year? Everyone is telling you that you cannot break the rules. Well I’m here to tell you that is a lie.

Traditionally buying a wedding gown would take upwards to nine months. NINE MONTHS! This time included shopping, ordering, waiting, waiting, waiting again and then alterations. Can you see why this take so long? We are at This Magic Moment Bridal Studio have a different take on this old tradition.

That’s where we come in as a alternative to the waiting game. 90% of the dresses on our racks you take home the day you find them. Of course you are still going to need alterations and with a little planning that can go off very smoothly. We can easily take that nine month turn around down to three months. In extreme situations It can be even shorter if you have that relationship with a seamstress set up prior to shopping.

You don’t want a dress off the rack and you want something a little more custom? We can do that too! Our line of designer gowns call Jasmine has a 14 to 6 week turnaround. Takes a little more planning but you can still be done in that 3 to 4 months time range.

So my best advice to you is to start working with an expert who understands that not everyone has a year to plan a wedding. Work with somebody who will listen to you as an individual and will guide you through the process. You’re really lucky you found that person and now we want to meet you face to face.

Visit us at www.PGHweddingsale.com to book your private bridal experience. Let myself or my team guide you and help you pick your gown easily. Looking forward to seeing you soon.

When do I start shopping for my wedding dress?

First thing to do when getting engaged and planning your wedding is to prepare your budget.  Budget’s are important for almost everyone.  It keeps you organized, it keeps stress down, and it keeps your wedding in perspective for you.  Do some research and see what your area’s averages are for all your vendors, including wedding dresses.

You have no idea?  Today’s Pinterest is so handy to view a variety of designers and dresses.  Look through bridal magazines.  You may discover you start liking a designer.  Find out that designers average price ranges and you will get a good idea on what a dress of your taste costs.  It’s a good starting point.

If it is above your price range, don’t stress.  Trust us, there are gorgeous dresses in lots of other price ranges.  This is just you getting an idea of what you like and what average costs may be.  It is not set in stone.  Plus what’s on a model (maybe even photoshopped) may be very different on you.  So this is just about getting ideas.

One of the best advice we can give is go shopping with an open mind.  Don’t say no to this and that without ever trying them on.  And your prom dress is still very different as wedding dresses are made and altered so much better to fit you perfectly.

Make sure you try on the different shapes, different materials, different colors, and different styles.  This dress is like no other.  It will probably be the most expressive garment you will ever wear, and may surprise you on what it looks like.  It is probably like nothing you have ever worn before.

Once you have a budget you feel comfortable with, are prepared to buy, it’s time to look.  Depending on your designer, average time frame for dresses to be delivered run from 9 months to 10 weeks.  That’s a large time frame.  Obviously buying sooner is better without knowing.  Ideally about 1 year to 9 months out because it allows for a little shopping time, time to order and get the dress in, and then, don’t forget, another 3 months for alterations.  Look to see what bridal stores carry some of the designers you liked.

We see so many brides, first place, even first dress, and they fall in love.  Then they get worried as they just came to try on or play.  They came with friends or by themselves and are torn as their loved one is not there.  Make sure to come shopping with those one to three people who are very important to you and who will love on you.

Wedding dresses are very emotional and important decisions in a persons life.  It is nice to have that someone special there for approval, guidance and support.  Plus, it is a lot more fun as you have them with you to celebrate when you say YES.

And if it is that first store or first dress, it’s OK.  You know what you like and you know what you feel beautiful in.  Trust yourself. You know yourself pretty good!!  Ask yourself in that moment, is it in my budget? Do I feel beautiful in it?  Do I love this dress on me?  Am I comfortable in it?  Yes comfort matters to as you will more-in-likely be in this dress for 12 hours.  If you answer all with a yes and you don’t want to take it off, you probably have a perfect dress for you.

Know the stores policies on payment.  Almost every bridal store is all sales final.  So if you say yes, that is your dress.  And that is perfect.  You loved it, your loved ones loved it, it’s perfect.  No more looking.  Big check on that part of your list.  Now start planning the bridesmaids dresses, flowers, etc.  Many stores require a downpayment to order (between 50% and 75%), then the remainder at delivery.  A few many offer payment/layaway programs, but if time is to short, this option will not be available.

So when you are ready to look and buy, find a store or two you really want to go to.  It is always great to get recommendations from friends who have had great experiences.  Or, check out the local Knot, WeddingWire, Google, and/or Facebook reviews to get a good feel of a store for you.  Gather your loved ones calendars together, and book your appointment.

Come energized, come ready, and come to have fun.  It is fun!  Embrace being the center of attention, embrace feeling beautiful, embrace the entire wedding experience.  Be gentle with yourself, love yourself, be you.

Never guess a wedding dress by the bag!

wedding dress

Never guess a wedding dress by the bag it is in.  When you are looking at gowns enclosed in even clear bags on racks, you have no idea of the beauty that lies inside unless you take it out.  The bags are great because they protect your dress from dirt, snags, tears, and discolorations, so they are absolutely necessary.  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen a dress in the bag and never gave it a second glance.  Then, it was taken out and tried on, and I couldn’t believe my eyes.  This wedding dress I so easily passed over was beyond gorgeous and stunning.  The front had so much more to be seen in the lines and details,  Then, I turned it over to the back and it was unbelievable.  The trains on so many dresses are pulled up and hidden, and they are what brides fall in love with the dress so many times.

Not only do you need to take it out, but you have to try it on.  You will never know if it is flattering or not until it is on your very own body.  So many brides come in with Pinterest pictures of the perfect sized model, with perfect photo alterations, and want only that dress.  Very rarely does it ever work that way.  Be open minded, and if something sparks your eye, try it on!  Until then, you will never know what looks best and amazes you the most.  And, always remember, have fun finding that magical wedding dress and trying it on.  Make happy wedding memories!  Hugs!

Best Bridal Wars Around!

Best Bridal Wars Around!

Pittsburgh just had the Best Bridal Wars around yesterday!  Teams of three, one bride and two bridesmaids, came together to battle against each other.  These ladies went all out decorating their costumes to match their creative team names.  Just a few great team names were Hot Mess Express, Muscles & Mascara, To The Alter & Beyond, and Diamonds in the Tough!  Costumes ranged from veils, garter belts, bling, tutu’s, and super hero capes!  Some even had wings.  But that was just the start of all the fun.  With over 15 cool vendors, each table offered a special game for these team to compete in.

Each vendor’s table declared a winner.  This Magic Moment Bridal Studio’s Bridal War game was “Who Wore it Best!”.  Each team member had to put on a wedding dress, run down the field, pick up a monster diamond ring or bouquet, and return for the best time.  Our team winner was the Spice Girls!  They were amazing coming in at only 47 seconds for all three ladies to run the course.  Marki Mark and the Funky Bunch came in a close second at 57 seconds.  No matter the time, all the teams were awesome.  They had smiles on their faces, worked together as a team, and laughed until their ribs hurt!  Us included.  It was the most exciting, energetic and fun bridal show we have ever been to.

One lucky bride who won the entire event was awarded $1000 towards her wedding!  Plus, hundred of dollars and prizes were given away to many other teams for their participation and amazing bridal team spirit.  We can’t wait for Bridal Wars Pittsburgh to return again soon.  Plus, we hope the brides and their friends we met will come visit This Magic Moment Bridal Studio soon.  We enjoyed the fun, laughter, and spirit from everyone.  Make sure to watch this fun video of all the excitement and special brides and their teams from yesterday.
