Lace That Makes The Dress

Lace Wedding Dresses

Lace has been around since the beginning of fashion times.  It is known as an important part of royalty in their dress attire and weddings.  And it plans to stay!

Oh do our brides love their lace.  There is a lace for every bride.   Do you want it to be chic and comfortable, or do you want striking and sophisticated?  Do you want it to be vintage, antique, old-world, modern, floral, or geometric?

Lace is a very important part of many weddings and wedding dresses. It must be handled with care as it is very delicate to tearing and fraying.  Keeping it in a safe place, one that is flat is preferred to keep it from stretching. Always have it altered by a wedding dress professional. Always go for quality over quantity to look elegant and stylish, but know that it will cost more than the cheap machine-made lace. Consider your veil as it may also have this beautiful lace matching your dress.

So what are some of the different types of lace that adorn wedding dresses these days and which one do you want to consider for your wedding?

lace wedding dressAlencon Lace is a needlepoint lace that is usually found with a floral design on a sheer or net background. It is outlined with a fine cording and often times is embellished with small crystals, seed pearls, or sequins.  It is characterized by its 3-D effect. It is the most common and is sometimes called the “Queen of Lace”. Named of the city of origination of Alencon, France, it has adorn fashion since the 16th century.

lace wedding dressBrussels Lace is now known as an old-fashion bobbin lace.  This lace is very delicate. The floral details are created separately and woven together.  Open stitches that border the pattern are it’s signature, as well as unusual and attractive patterns.

lace wedding dressChantilly Lace is known for its fine ground, outline pattern and abundant detail on a fine plain netting background. The well-defined outlined pattern is either made with silk or linen. Chantilly lace is often used on wedding dress sleeves and overlays.  Usually, abundant floral details and ribbon motiffs adore this lace, and what people love is the unique light and shadow effect it gives off. Ig is the most fluttery and romantic of the group. It’s sheerness can give off a sexy vintage vibe.

Lace Wedding DressDuchesse Lace is known for its large and exquisite floral motiff with larger open spaces in it than other Brussel laces.  The floral motiffs are joined to each other by bars instead of mesh patterns. These motiffs are raised up from the base layer and most times feature large sprays of floral designs.

Lace wedding dressGuipure Lace, also called Venetian lace, is a stiff, open designed lace without a net background and usually is made into a series of close patterns.  It can resemble embroidery or macrame. This lace is heavier than most other types of lace. Its raised texture gives it a bold look. Often found on winter wedding dresses and gives a dramatic statement.

Eyelet Lace is a cotton fabric that is sweet and summery.  Embroidered cutouts often give it a country-spun feel. Usually seen with scalloped edges that provide an heirloom quality.  Its lightness and breathability is often a great choice for an outdoor, warm-weather wedding.lace wedding dresses

Brocade Lace is a class of richly decorative shuttle-woven fabrics, often made in colored silks and with or without gold and silver threads.

Embroidered Lace is growing more popular.  This embroidered lace has delicate patterns .  They are tightly stitched onto an illusion base, such as tulle, to give the appearance of an applique.  It also comes in a variety of patterns.

Your natural eye will gravitate to the lace that is appealing and attractive to you.  High-end designers will have one of these laces or ones similar.  The quality will be obvious from the naked eye.  If it is coming off or there edges are fraying, it’s not of top quality.

With that quality, dresses will cost more.  A very good price of a high-end designer lace dress at our store usually goes over $1000.  At most bridal stores, you will need to reach at least $1200-$1500 to start.  The delicate laces will be found around the $3000 price point or higher.

So with all this info, if there is a type you love, research designers that have a large portion of their inventory with that lace.  Let your eye and gut help guide you.  Try different ones on within your budget and see if there is a difference.

Most importantly, have fun at your bridal appointment.  Enjoy the experience.  Keep an open-mind.  Make sure to try on different styles and lace if possible.  These dresses are like no other so you never know until you try it on.
